AKPHAEZYA (13.45-14.45) "De eerste band zal voor velen de grootste verrassing van het festival zijn (positief of negatief laat ik nu nog even in het midden).
Deze 4 mans formatie uit Frankrijk (oeps, het zijn 3 mannen en een vrouw) spelen een stijl die ligt tussen jazz, latin en metal. Dit is geen muziek voor mensen met oogkleppen, want de invloeden komen hier eigenlijk van over de gehele wereld.
Zangeres Nehl speelt normaal de klassieke piano, maar hier deed de elektronische het zeer goed (ik kreeg later wel nog een privé optreden in de hal van het Kasteel op een echte piano). De diversiteit van deze band bevindt zich niet tussen de verschillende nummers, die zit vooral in ieder nummer zelf. Alle songs staan per stuk bol van de diverse invloeden. Toen de Latin invloeden ten gehore kwamen begonnen 2 fans samen zelfs klassiek te dansen in het publiek (heel eventjes maar gelukkig, want het waren 2 mannen).
De vocalen van Nehl gaan ver en behalve de jazzy stijl hanteert zij ook de grunt. Dat was voor een aantal mannen even schrikken geblazen, maar die schrik was snel overwonnen.
Behalve nummers van hun enige album, speelden ze ook nummers van hun demo. Daarmee wisten ze hun tijd goed vol te maken. De gitarist, bassist en Nehl hadden allen contact met het publiek, wat er voor zorgde dat deze mengelmoes warm onthaald werd. Een zeer goed begin van de 2e dag.

Akphaezya isn't exactly your average prog band with their mix of jazz, metal and Kate Bush-like escapades, so I totally loved their show. Nehl Aëlin is a very charismatic frontwoman, especially when she's grunting while wearing a flowery dress (or dancing on a bar stool at the afterparty). But it's not just her, the band contains of excellent musicians and the songs are definitely interesting. Probably not everybody's cup of tea, but they managed to impress quite a few people.
